The new requirements were brought forward in 2013 in
different forums of FSBPT and are also recommended by FSBPT members. As per the
Annual Meeting in San Francisco held in November 2014, FSBPT shared a timeline
for implementation of the new NPTE eligibility requirements among all the shareholders.
New Requirements
- · Lifetime Limit on NPTE
- · Low Score Limit
- · English Proficiency Requirement
- · Education Equivalency using the CWT
What these requirements mean to a Physical Therapist ?
Lifetime limit on NPTE
means a physical therapist will be able to take the exam a maximum of six (6)
times. An individual can take the NPTE for PTs six times. Any Physical
Therapist who has already tested six times will no longer be allowed to test
unless a jurisdiction ( State Board) chooses to appeal this policy on a
specific PT’s behalf. PTs who had already appeared in last three years would be
intimated about the new requirement and would be provided three attempts in
2015 to clear NPTE before the new requirement goes into effect.
Low Score limit
means a physical therapist who has appeared in NPTE receive two(2) very low
scores on the exam, currently defined as performing at or close to chance level
(scale scores 400 and below), will not be allowed to test again. Currently, Physical therapist who receive a very low
score on the exam are notified by FSBPT that their performance is so very low from
the minimum competence level and that the applicant need to enroll into serious
remediation course, such as enrolling in another PT educational program, before
appearing again in NPTE and that another score that is very low (400 or below)
may result in further action by FSBPT such as prohibition for appearing in the
exam. No scores prior to January 1, 2016 will be considered by
FSBPT, which means all candidates will have a “clean slate” with regard to this
eligibility requirement.
English Language Proficiency is also one of the requirements
recommended by FSBPT members are under consideration would be taken into effect
from 2017.
Education equivalency as per the FSBPT CWT is the fourth
requirements recommended by FSBPT members in 2013 are under consideration would
be taken into effect from 2017
FSBPT also come up with a appeal process for the state board
to appeal on behalf of Physical therapist for lifetime limit or low score
limit. The reason the state board endorsing a Licensure applicant in their
state is most likely the remediation carried out by the applicant
2015 is the best time to appear in NPTE with lots of new
requirements coming up in 2016 & 2017. We recommend all the Physical
Therapist to study well for the exam, take professional prep programs for NPTE
and PEAT exams to be taken prior to registering for NPTE. Any therapist who is
scoring less than 75% in PEAT requires additional preparation for the NPTE
exam.
